Media Design School in Auckland ranks 4th in CG Student Awards

New Zealand Movie News

Auckland’s Media Design School has recently ranked number 4 in the School of the Year category in the 2015 CG Student Awards.

According to CG’s website, the School of the Year category is a critical part of the annual event: “It recognises and rewards the schools helping the next generation of digital artists enter the industry with strong skills, confidence, and a direction.”

The Auckland school, which is the #1 institution for animation, visual effects, and game art in the Asia Pacific Region, was given a total of 226 points (the top winner, Gnomon School of Visual Effects in Los Angeles, received 351 points). MDS also offers Bachelor level courses in Graphic Design and Creative Advertising.

“A real highlight for us is seeing the Media Design School, New Zealand, make such a dramatic jump up the ladder from previous years. It’s the first time we have actually seen a school from the Oceania region claim a spot in the list,” said CG Student co-founder Alwyn Hunt.

The CG Student Awards is an annual event that showcases and rewards excellence in computer graphics from students and fresh graduates. Since its inception in 2009, it has helped kick-start careers of digital artists, awarded over 70 internships, and given away over USD$900,000 in prizes.

The CG has also announced that it is now officially called The Rookies, which will be in effect next year. It will run from March 7 to June 24, 2016.

The rebranding’s goal is to have a fresh design and vision, as well as to introduce new additional prize divisions focusing on today’s most highly competitive artistic industries: Architecture and Visualisation, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Fashion Design, Illustration and Concept Art, Photography, Game Design and Development, Industrial and Product Design, Visual Effects and Animation, Virtual Reality, and Web and Application and Design
