Reviews icon. Hooch Bar - 20 January, 46 Coutenay Place
Hooch is such a great word.  It rolls off the tongue with that ccchhh sound, like a boy-racer changing gears at the traffic lights. And the name suits Courtenay Places best new bar to a T.  It’s laidback with a sense of old-school sass, like a lady of the night with a heart of gold and a body full of secrets. Hooch used to be known as ...

Reviews icon. Madam Jo Jo's - 17-19 Blair Street (Temperance), Level one
For those of you who have been on a deserted island or running from the law, you might not realize that Wellington is now home to what is being billed as “The biggest bar in New Zealand” – Temperance bar on Blair Street.  This behemoth of a building is really four bars in one, most of which occupy their own level within Temperance’s shopping ...

Reviews icon. PK Entertainment Launch - Mighty Mighty, September 26
I had never seen Mighty Mighty so quiet, Last time I was there it was a capacity crowd of neon hoodies and drainpipes. Mind you, at 5:30 on a Wednesday night, most bars aren’t exactly expecting a raging crowd. By 6, the tables were filling as bowls of nibbles flowed in from the Matterhorn kitchens below, goat’s milk feta and manuka honey balls, ...

Reviews icon. The Aviators CD Release Party – Mighty Mighty, Saturday 16th June
Texture had a bit of a love affair with Mighty Mighty this past weekend, finishing it off with something of a feel-good soirée on Saturday night.  The Aviators are perhaps Wellington’s best-known funk band, and they certainly have a legion of supporters.  The bar was pretty full by my arrival around ten, and it was clear that these ...

Reviews icon. Pan Pacifics Dance Championships – Mighty Mighty, Thursday 14th June
Wow, Wellington.  I wasn’t expecting that.  For a town allegedly filled with public servants, you sure know how to move.  I was a little late arriving at the third heat of the Pan Pacific Dance Champs last Thursday, and by the time I got there, people had registered, had their numbers on their backs and were more than warmed ...

Forum icon. Best venue for a weekday first date?
What do you think?  A recent survey amongst my acquaintances revealed Chow to be far and away the best option (2 for 1s on Wednesday will help with any first-date jitters - just don't indulge in too many).  Reasons being:  - Right combination of casual and stylish   - Buzzy atmosphere any night of the week, without being ...

Forum icon. What to do this weekend??
What's happening?  It's a beautiful day outside, and I really can't concentrate on the last few hours of work...most of my friends have been hijacked by the 48hr film challenge, but I'm quite keen to go out this weekend - what're the picks of the bunch?

Forum icon. New menus on the horizon!
I love this time of year - the days are shorter, sure, but that only means the night time is longer, which is no bad thing.  We have lovely crisp sunny mornings, and it's quite nice to either go out at night and for it to actually feel like night-time, or to have a cosy night in.  And the clothing options are infinitely better. But one ...

Forum icon. Re: Table Service
Oh, I agree 100%. I think I have become quite spoilt, because most places are so great at service.  I get quite miffed now when I go to a bar and have to ask for a glass of water, whereas a few years ago I would probably have been pleasantly surprised to ever get one without asking!
