:Samuel F Scott – 20 September, Downstage Theatre

There was a relaxed atmosphere inside the Downstage Theatre for Samuel F Scott’s intimate Soundstage performance. Patrons were mingling, ordering drinks and, no doubt, comparing their vintage apparel right till the last possible moment before Scott took the stage and donned his guitar.
The evening began with a smooth unaccompanied number that showcased Scott's guitar prowess and tender vocals. The talent of Scott as a solo(ish)-singer-songwriter is undeniable and he has clearly grown from his Phoenix Foundation beginnings.
Scott was then joined by his core Bunnies on Ponies entourage, Craig Terris on drums and Tom Callwood on bass, and launched into the harmonic
Sodium Ions. This configuration - aside from the sporadic addition of Max Walker, Rachel French, a couple of grim reapers and some pathetic-looking dancing animals - set the scene for the remainder of the evening.
The set captured material from his latest release Straight Answer Machine (2008) as well as favourites from his debut album The Hunt Brings us Life (2006), including
War over Water and my absolute favourite, the grimacingly-hopeful
Giving Up is my New Morning Sun.
The performance as a whole, while musically brilliant, was very odd from the avid-heckling fan in the front row to the bizarre band-banter and the performance of
Moist People that morphed into David Bowie’s
Ashes to Ashes to the rendition of Pete Seeger’s
If I had a Hammer as the finale.
Odd… but musically satisfying.
