Reviews :Hooch Bar - 20 January, 46 Coutenay Place

Hooch is such a great word.  It rolls off the tongue with that ccchhh sound, like a boy-racer changing gears at the traffic lights. And the name suits Courtenay Places best new bar to a T.  It’s laidback with a sense of old-school sass, like a lady of the night with a heart of gold and a body full of secrets.

Hooch used to be known as the mercury lounge, before it changed hands into the sturdy grasp of Hawthorn Lounges owner.  It was briefly called 46C for a while, then Johnny had the place turned inside out, and named after that goddess of the night so many of us pay homage to.

The bar has a burlesque theme which is subtle to the point of being easily missed.  But the lighting and careful management of the décor do have a comfortably wicked tone about them.  The roof has exposed eaves, an almost church-like touch which just adds to the relaxed yet classy feel of the place.

Service here is also at a premium, with NZ bartender of the year awards and nominations, just between Hawthorn legend Johnny McKenzie, and former Alice Alumni, Holly Illiston.  The rest of the staff all go about their work with a high standard of skill and professionalism, so bad service should not be a factor here.

The cocktail list has some old school favorites that keep in line with the bars theme.  The Gin Shine conceals a fizz and zing to tantalize the taste buds on first sip.  Whisky shy's have a punchy taste, that after time, smooth with the melted ice to taste like warm honey trickling down your throat.  Magnificent.

This has to be Wellington’s best new bar at the moment (Though Watusi and Duke Carvells are nothing to be sniffed at).  This is the perfect accompaniment to Hawthorn Lounges dapper gentleman’s club – a sexy sophisticated woman with a passion for all things decadent and desirable.  Don’t try to deny her, because you know she will get her own way in the end....
