:Insight and Critique
IntensCITY week has started! Events and installations are underway. You may have noticed a whole lot of brightly-coloured shipping containers popping up around town: these are part of the INSite art project that's one of the first components of IntensCITY to get started. A diverse bunch of artists have been asked to respond to the urban environment, and the results range from trams and mock surveys to overheard conversations and upcycling projects.
Most of the INSite installations are currently in a preparation phase, gathering material or growing living art works in their mysterious depths, getting ready for the exhibition phase, but in many cases there is plenty to see already (if you strike them at the right time). If you wander around and have a look (here's a map of the locations), you'll see schedules of activity, descriptions of the projects and web addresses on the sides.
Another aspect of IntensCITY that's already visible is the Urban Critique billboard campaign, where artists take over walls and bollards to express their reactions to city space. Among the most notable ones are some enigmatic photographic works by Andy Morley Hall, including large and eyecatching posters in Ghuznee St between Ernesto and POPUP, and in Garrett St (down the road across from Floriditas).
Sometimes it's hard to distinguish art installations from real urban life. I spotted some people setting up a stall beside the INSite container outside Sweet Mother's Kitchen, and asked if they were part of INSite as a performance artwork. As it turns out they were just selling fruit, nuts and flowers on Courtenay Place on a Friday night! Nevertheless, the combination of street sellers, art installation and Friday night revelers made for a magic atmosphere.
