Features :Swonderful Frocks and Handmade Bits and Bobs...

SwonderfulA sweet wee boutique-y store, Swonderful not only stocks unique, handmade clothing but a whole swag of random bits and bobs. Alongside t-shirts and frocks, you'll find trinkets, jewellery, the odd bit of art, snazzy baby clothes and homewares.

Swonderful recently relocated to Victoria Street (where the old Ed's Juice Bar used to be) from Brooklyn, and the first thing I noticed about it was that it is very similar to a lot of the little independent boutiques that used to pop up all the time on Auckland's K' Road, particularly stores like Skylark and Girl which are nestled in St Kevin's Arcade.

Of course it's totally appropriate that when I visited Swonderful, they were playing 50s pop revivalists The Brunettes on the music box. Their teeth-dissolvingly sweet and twee pop is the perfect soundtrack to the very cute and crafty wares that are dotted about the shop.

Owner Ginny makes most of the products (clothes, jewellery and homewares) under her own Papercup label, though is open to supporting and showcasing emerging local designers. The bottom line is that Swonderful celebrates the unique and the handmade. I saw some earrings that looked like magnets and a smart canary yellow sundress that I just know Heather from The Brunettes would covet. But best of all, I spied a red and white stripy t-shirt dress ($140) that has those kind of stripes that look out of focus. Swonderful is open Monday-Friday 10am-6pm, Saturday 11am-5pm and Sunday 12-4pm.
