Features :Kitty Fisher at MFP

Walking into Madame Fancy Pants on upper Cuba St I often get the same feeling I had just before opening Christmas presents when I was seven. Despite it perhaps being only a week or so since my last visit, I can reliably sense a pang of excitement in anticipation of what unexpected gem I might find on this particular occasion.

Owner Claire Terry certainly does an fantastic job of sourcing the most original, feminine and downright pretty jewellery, clothing and trinkets from here and elsewhere, and upon my most recent MFP visit, I was delighted to find what I believe may be one of my favourite collection of baubles to date. A tough call, yes, but I'll tell you what, my seven-year-old Christmas-memory pangs don't lie.

I love tea. And I love things that are tiny. And MFP is currently stocking a beautiful collection by Melbourne-based designer jewellery label Kitty Fisher, which consists of nothing other than tiny, tiny tea sets. I'm in miniature heaven. The collection includes a tea tray brooch (a Lilliputian strawberry gilt edge tea tray on which sits a teapot, sugar bowl, milk jug and silver spoon), a teacup necklace (a wee teacup on tigers tail wire), and my personal favourite; tea set brooch pins (strawberry and forget-me-not entire tea sets hanging from kilt pins). Delightful!

And if the pure sweetness of the Kitty Fisher collection isn't enough to have you walking out of the store with a new prize, the socially-conscious jewellery label is committed to ethical business practices and says ‘we donate our money, time and goods where we feel it makes this planet a better place to be'. Good people. With your tiny teacup you get a bonus tiny glow of virtue.

And it sure beats the electronic chess board I received Christmas 1989.
